100 milliliters, one-liter bag, and exceptions for medications: the reliable checklist before security screening.
Status: September 16, 2026. Despite modern scanners at some airports, the nationwide reliable rule across Europe remains: liquids, aerosols, and gels must be in containers with a maximum capacity of 100 milliliters and together in a transparent, resealable one-liter bag.
A half-full 200-milliliter bottle is not allowed because the printed capacity counts. Creams, lotions, toothpaste, gels, sprays, and similar mixtures are also considered liquids.
Medications and special food needed during the trip, as well as baby food, may be exempt from the 100-milliliter rule. Security personnel can request proof or a separate inspection. Duty-free liquids must remain in the prescribed sealed security bag with the proof of purchase.
Some airports may offer different procedures thanks to new security technology. However, you should only rely on this if the specific departure airport officially confirms it. Also, the return flight may again be checked according to the 100-milliliter rule.
