More protection for mobility aids, free accompanying persons, and clear assistance in case of disruptions: the current EU status.
Status: 16 September 2026. The EU passenger rights reform decided in 2026 strengthens the protection of people with disabilities and travelers with reduced mobility. The new provisions are intended to apply after publication and a transition period in 2027.
If an airline requires an accompanying person for safety reasons and cannot provide the necessary assistance itself, this accompanying person shall travel free of charge. If practically possible, both persons should sit next to each other.
Wheelchairs and other essential mobility aids are specially protected in everyday travel. If they are damaged or lost, special claims already apply today; the reform aims to further improve support and enforcement.
Those who need help at the airport should register their needs already when booking or at the latest within the deadline specified by the provider. Descriptions and dimensions of wheelchairs, batteries or other aids should be included in the travel documents. A written confirmation provides clarity.
